8 years, still "sucking"
....but it died today. It caught fire somehow. We got this vac for our wedding almost 9 years ago and even the day it died it was working perfectly. After about 7 years though, the attachments and overall logistics and plastic parts of the machine are age appropriate: hoses aren't staying stuck together as well, filter door latch broke and swings open, some screws are missing. This sort of thing doesn't make me think it's a bad model, or anything, it's just an age thing. We are a military family and this vac has moved around the country (in moving trucks, with movers abusing it) and has performed well on all floor types. It's heavy, and sort of cumbersome, but I am so happy with how long it lasted and how long it's done a great job. I have not once wished it picked up dirt better and have often cursed it because it sucked up something that I thought was out of it's range (powerful!) we vacuum with this 2-3 times per week (2 small kids, and cats) on 1500 sq ft of carpet(60%) and linoleum/hardwoods(40%) (this is pretty much the standard base house ratio) I have accidentally sucked up marbles, screws, socks and even a scarf with it's powerful suction in both the tubes and the beater bar. I'm sad I need to buy a new one. four stars because it's heavy and I hate lugging it up the stairs,I wish it had a stairs attachment, and because I hate spending the money on bags!!! it can cost for 2 type Y bags (which this one takes)

I wish this vacuum never came into my life
I acquired this vacuum in 06. It was a wedding gift that replaced my husband's vacuum from the 1970's. I started having problems with this machine in the first few uses. The belt breaks constantly. I keep a large supply on hand. The on and off button broke. I have to unplug it to turn it on or off. It is heavy and hard to maneuver. When not in the upright position, the attachments fall out. The handle part where you grip the vacuum? The cap on the end falls off.

The good things, the good things...It does a good job of telling you if the floor is still dirty. The bag is easy to change.

Other than that, I wish I had kept the one from the 70's. I'm SO ANGRY at this particular vacuum, I will NEVER buy another Hoover because I am so disgusted they let this one come into existence.

What a waste of money
I bought this vacuum less than a year ago and now it will not even turn on. I haven't liked this thing since I bought it. The "cyclone tunnel" thing is hard to clean out. Dog hair/dirt/etc. get stuck in the little holes. I have never been able to use the little latch to empty out the canister, I have had to unlock it from the top so that I can dig all the "yuck" out of the cyclone. The hose is not long like they say. It is a pain to use and usually the whole cleaner would tip over when I was just cleaning the couches. Since the first time I have used the vacuum it has always left behind a sort of burnt rubber smell. The suction was great for the first month or so. I even took it to a repair man to make sure it wasn't just me and he told me that unless you buy a "top of the line Hoover you are wasting your money". I cleaned this thing regularly, emptied out the canister every time I was through vacuuming (even when it wasn't full) and it still crapped out on me. The vacuum was pretty and the girl at the retail store suggested it. This was a huge waste of my time and money. BEWARE.

Already broken
I have only had this vacuum a year, I'm not crazy about it. The attachments have to be used in conjuction with a tube with a flap on it, and the flap broke off, now if I want to use the attachments I have to block the hole with my hand or watch everything shoot back out. It also keeps tipping over on me. Othewise ok,

Still Going
After reading the reviews, I had to issue my own. I purchased the Hoover Supreme Mach 3.3 Windtunnel in '96 or '97 and it is still going, however, just recently,the motor is making a loud noise just as I shut it off. I suppose it is finally dying. It has gone thru three remodeling projects over the years and only problems are belt replacements 3 or 4 times which I found no problem replacing myself as long as I have the right belt to replace it with. It does tend to tip unexpectedly and bags need to be replaced when only half full for best suction. After the brushes on the roller wore down, I had problems picking up fuzzes/strings ( I sew alot)
from a tighly woven carpet - needed a lint roller! Instead of replacing the roller at .+ I'll put that toward next vac. Sounds like this may have been one of the better models Hoover has made over the years.
